A pair of Kakiemon style dishes with a river scene. Japan, Arita, circa 1700

The shallow dishes are decorated in underglaze blue, enriched with Kakiemon enamels and touches of gilding. At the centre, a river landscape painted in underglaze blue depicts two boats moored near an island, figures crossing a bridge, and distant huts set among mountainous peaks, all enclosed within a double underglaze-blue circle. The border is adorned with enamelled peonies and camellias, interspersed with fruiting pomegranates and underglaze-blue rocks.
