A royal mustard pot for the French market For Louis XV, King of France (1710-1774). China, Yongzheng

The mustard pot is decorated in the famille verte palette with translucent enamels and features the decor ordered for Louis XV, King of France (1710-1774). The main motif is an underglaze blue double lotus leaves holding a chrysanthemum flower, itself surmounted by a basket with citrus fruit. Additional motifs on the pot include a spray of peonies; fans and chrysanthemum heads enclosed within rounded cartouches.

The rim is decorated with a floral frieze bearing the King’s cypher, a double opposing ‘L’ with laurel branches inside four cartouches. The base features a frieze with fer-de-lance motifs. The lid has a similar decoration with a frieze depicting the collar of the Holy Spirit. The body is decorated with the single coat of arms of Louis XV, D’azur à trois fleurs de lys d’or, with the collars of the Order of Saint Michael and of the Holy Spirit, surmounted by the royal French crown. The mustard pot has an unstamped 18th century silver mount.

Many commissions were very likely made during the 1720’s and the 1730’s, the first commissions decorated in the famille verte palette and translucid enamels; the later ones in the famille rose palette and opaque enamels. All the orders had the same design and “colours”.

This shape was probably produced circa 1725-1735. It also existed in the famille rose palette.

It is the only known example in the order of the King of France. Other shapes recorded of the royal commissions include very large and massive chargers; small tureens of graduated size and a large, rounded tureens; candlesticks; wine coolers; an écuelle; sauceboats; rectangular spice boxes; ewers with octagonal basins; tea, chocolate or coffee sets; knives; very large fountain-vases; or bidets.
