Two powder blue teapots decorated with mandarin ducks. Kangxi

These two globular teapots, with flaring spouts and loop handles, are covered with a powder-blue glaze. This distinctive “cobalt-powder” tone was achieved at Jingdezhen by blowing a suspension of cobalt pigment onto a previously fired porcelain body; a transparent glaze was then applied over the surface, producing a subtly speckled ground. The gilt decoration depicts aquatic birds—probably geese or ducks—moving among reeds and wild grasses, accompanied by a few insects and stylised clouds. The neck is further enriched with gilt friezes and cartouches.
