The interior of the dish is delicately painted with a circular panel depicting two boys playing in a garden, beside a lady and a scholar in a pavilion. The scene is encircled by a border featuring ladies at leisurely pursuits. On the back ten different flowering plants on the rim, on the base a large rounded peony with leaves.
Two dishes of this model and of this size are in the collections of the Rijkmuseum (Amsterdam). One is published by C.J.A. Jörg and Jan Van Campden in Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam: The Ming and Qing, 2001, p. 255, no. 291.
The shape of this plate is derived from a Western pewter model. The border design occurs on comparable plates and dishes produced as sets with identical decoration. Some plates of this type are known with Dutch coat of arms. They often have the flowering peony on the base, painted with the circle which is so common wares of the period.
