A Chinese famille rose plate decorated with the Immortals. Yongzheng

In the centre, within a large circular reserve, appears a depiction of the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian), the celebrated figures of the Daoist pantheon, gathered in a rocky landscape beneath a pine tree, a traditional symbol of longevity. Each Immortal can be identified by his or her distinctive attributes:

  • Li Tieguai, leaning on his crutch and holding a gourd,

  • Zhongli Quan, leader of the group, holding his magic fan and with a small handled ewer containing the elixir of immortality,

  • Lü Dongbin, with his sword on his back

  • He Xiangu, with her basket of flowers,

  • Han Xiangzi, with his bamboo flute,

  • Lan Caihe, holding a lotus blossom,

  • Cao Guojiu, with his bamboo clappers,

  • Zhang Guolao, depicted with a scroll.

The figures are rendered with expressive faces and varied gestures, painted in a refined famille rose palette of turquoise blue, emerald green, iron-red, manganese violet, and ochre yellow, delicately outlined in black and enriched with touches of gold.

The border is decorated with a continuous frieze of vine leaves intertwined with tendrils and stylised grape clusters, executed in gilded, rose, and brown enamels, framing the central scene. The rim is highlighted with a gilded line.
