Probably ordered by Abraham Abeleven (1714-1776), who lived in the Dutch East Indies. He was a Company merchant in Batavia, an alderman 1738-39, cashier-general in 1740 and supercargo in 1750. He was Governor of the settlement on Ternate from 1755-57. The porcelain may also have been ordered by Arnoldus Abeleven (1726-77), who was employed by the Dutch East India Company in Amsterdam
